the character limit for qn's.

While i was reading a PQN I noticed that it cut off. I realized it was because of this lovely new limit we deal with. I think that if we were to write a qn that was beyond the limit, it might be able to show up in more than one qn. I realize you say it's not "quick novels" but at the same time, 500 characters is simply not enough to get some points across. Could we at least have the limit upped or something?

Well, well, well, allow me Yankee me "favorite" neighbor to go off topic for a moment to simply WELCOME you back...back..look whose back..Yankee is back!!! Man when you get from all accounts what I heard "banned" and then now here you are again *smiles...

i agree connie, the limit needs to iver be upped or removed

Post 4 by rat (star trek rules!) on Sunday, 22-Oct-2006 14:23:35

i fully agree with everyone else, this qn limit is very stupid. i didn't mind the long qns, only lazy people would mind that kind of thing

I agree with everyone here as well. The Quick Note limit should be upped or removed.

Post 6 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Sunday, 22-Oct-2006 18:00:08

if you have something long to write to someone, write it in a private message. As we've stated enough times I'm sure to all of you, quick notes are "quick notes". that means something small, and something simple.

Post 7 by rat (star trek rules!) on Sunday, 22-Oct-2006 19:08:52

then eighter remove the limit, or change the name.

Post 8 by admin (I just keep on posting!) on Sunday, 22-Oct-2006 22:17:03

how is the name inaccurate? They're quick notes. 500 chars is 5-6 lines of text. If you go into MSN Messenger, it barely allows 500 characters. Nor does I R C chat, Skype chat, etc.

Post 9 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Sunday, 22-Oct-2006 22:57:38

"quick" "note" "quick" "note" quick, means something fast. Note, means something short. Need we say more?

Post 10 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Monday, 23-Oct-2006 10:13:45

so still, can't the quick notes simply extend to other quicknotes?> if you're typing, and you're saying something, do you really think that you'd count how many characters you've typed?

Post 11 by Grace (I've now got the ggold prolific poster award! wahoo! well done to me!) on Monday, 23-Oct-2006 11:56:42

I must admit it is a trip Yankee and it can be done..

Post 12 by Jage (Zone BBS, a decade of madness) on Monday, 23-Oct-2006 13:41:38

you certainly can send more than one note. Nothing stops you from doing that.

This is True J-Squared, and did so time and time again... All I can say is "Thank Goodness" someOne did not logg in with say, a Baby directly on the way seeking advise... at least that particular night... It would have been #1)Trying to juggle thinking what questions to ask and #2) Juggle 500 CHARACTER LIMIT all at the same time..

Post 14 by Jage (Zone BBS, a decade of madness) on Tuesday, 31-Oct-2006 8:59:23

The limit has been bumped back to 1,000 across the board.
Thanks for your input.

Yea. I rarely write long qn's, but I never realized how limiting 500 characters was until I attempted to answer someone's question and ran out of space. I couldn't believe I had gone over 500.

hmmm, now we seem to find the 1000 limit annoying. Here's a point I wish I'd have brought up almost 2 years ago, why not allow the long qn's? I mean, is it too difficult to hit the tab button and go a link further? seriously, what do people think?

Post 19 by maroon five (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Saturday, 06-Sep-2008 20:08:42

i think it's a good idea to make the qn's bigger, or, have them automatically make another qn. some people like to cut and paste things in their qn's, or write detailed ones if they're helping someone with something, so why not extend them in to another qn, or make the qn limit bigger?

Post 20 by Dusty (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 06-Sep-2008 21:10:03

A couple of reasons for not increasing the text limit. Firstly it's no fun reading reams of text which is peppered with emotes and special effects to make Jaws sound good. The other type of long qns tend to be massive "cut-and-paste" jobs which haven't been properly formatted and are also difficult to plough through.

The other point has already been made, that quicknotes should be just that. In general conversation messages should be fairly snappy so the discussion continues to flow. Detailed points should be reserved for pq or the boards. As has already been said, there's nothing stopping you sending a series of shorter notes. Yes it's a pain cutting and pasting but at least there's some spacing between them.

Post 21 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Saturday, 06-Sep-2008 22:10:41

what's to stop someone from hitting tab. That's all I want to know. It's not like that's a big strain on the fingers

Post 22 by maroon five (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Sunday, 07-Sep-2008 4:16:46

Garret's right. people hit tab now if they want to skip over a qn, so what's the difference? if you don't want to read it, then tab over it.

Post 23 by Dusty (This site is so "educational") on Sunday, 07-Sep-2008 6:28:54

I'm sure there's nothing wrong with pressing tab, however we're not all screen-reader users, hence my points about formatting and spacing.

Post 24 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Sunday, 07-Sep-2008 9:47:55

still, the point's pretty much the same

Post 25 by rat (star trek rules!) on Sunday, 07-Sep-2008 10:48:50

what, sighted people can't just skip that block of text? i thought links were highlighted a certain color in a browser. if you don't want to read the qn, just look for the highlight again. or, screen reader users just press tab like yankee says. simple.

Post 26 by yankee g wolverine (Account disabled) on Sunday, 07-Sep-2008 11:04:03

if these qn's were allowed to use HTML, I'd agree with keeping them shorter, but, as they aren't, and that should stay the same, extend the likmit, or do away with it.

Post 27 by DevilishAnthony (Just go on and agree with me. You know you want to.) on Sunday, 07-Sep-2008 11:42:33

Even 1000 can be limiting at times, but over all, I don't have a problem with it. I sure wouldn't complain if the limit was raised to maybe 1250 characters. That's probably as long as any quicknote ought to be.
